Do you have any way to re-train the brain to be happy? Especially meditation routines?
Well, this brain of mine is scary, too was severely hyperthyroid (read: ADHD) for many years undiagnosed … "So I'm having trouble concentrating in meditation. Any pointers? Anyone have a book of meditations, Buddhist or non-sectarian, that can help guide me till I get it? Thank you. I definitely need to put my mind on something, never there was nothing in it. Ever.
K Pat has given great advice on meditation. I have two additional suggestions, along with two references: 1. Almost everyone finds it very difficult, almost impossible, to sustain the practice of meditation without the support of others. That's why there are meditation centers the first place – to help people start and maintain a meditation practice. So I encourage you to find a group near you and practice with them as I can. A second advantage of Buddhist groups, and perhaps others, is likely to be a senior student or teacher who can help guide you through difficult passages of both meditation and life. 2. Sitting meditation is not the only form of meditation. Some Buddhist communities also make extensive singing meditation (in my Zen tradition, we sing for 1 hour in the evening, before sitting practice). Singing meditation is an excellent technique for those who have a "scary" mind (I sometimes call this mind "puppy" – which always bounces around and does not respond to the command "sit!"). So you can try to practice singing – I've found is a very powerful and fast method for clearing the mind of random thoughts.
