I recently attended a large workshop at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. The class is called "Reading Emotional Messages "and taught by Paul Ekman, Ph.D, a renowned scientist who regularly trains lawyers and police officials in his techniques.

Hidden Emotions, microexpressions, are the fleeting expression that people make when they are consciously or unconsciously, trying to hide their true emotional response. In microexpressions aware that you may be trying to lie, while with unconscious expressions that may not even be aware of what they truly feel. Ekman has done a study of these microexpressions and can provide the necessary training to recognize, and advice they need on how to use that knowledge appropriately. According Ekman, "These expressions tend to be very extreme and very fast. Eighty to 90 percent of the people we tested do not see them."

Ekman was a Professor Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry, University of California at San Francisco for 32 years. Its initial focus was on "nonverbal" behavior, and the mid-60s, was focused on the expression and physiology of emotion. It has developed a secondary interest in interpersonal deception too. Perhaps the most famous publication is the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which is used by police and intelligence agencies everywhere, and parents and therapists who want to be able to understand better the people around.

"With my children, spouse, friends and colleagues, if I do not understand how — either they feel about me or about (things) that may have nothing to do with me when we interact — then I'm going to have a useful exchange with them, " Ekman said.

In the 60s and 70s when Ekman began looking into the universality of facial expressions, all the major contemporary social scientists, Margaret Mead, believed that expressions were culturally learned, not innate. We proceeded to travel around the world with pictures of people doing different expressions facial and found people in cultures everywhere, from modern to stone age, agreed on the emotion behind the expression. Then he turned the study of production of these expressions and the 43 facial muscles that can create 10,000 expressions, which form the basis of their training.

There were seven universal emotions with unique facial expression. The emotions are: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, joy, surprise, and contempt. At least five of them are shared with nonhuman primates as well. Interestingly, the smile is the easiest expression to recognize, and the easiest to identify from a distance. These emotions have a specific trigger, come quickly, without thinking, and interact with physiology – which means limited to the expression of fear to create a response fear in his body too. With fear, neurons that signal your body to prepare to flee by sending blood to the large voluntary muscles of the legs. In anger, on the contrary, your brain signals your body to fight against sending blood to his hands. Try practicing on yourself: Do you feel a change in your emotional state by making changes in his facial expression?

Emotions have different triggers and learning those triggers is a step important in understanding their own emotions and why they respond the way you do. To date, the best way to learn to recognize the momentum unleashed before awareness of emotion is contemplative practice (meditation). In addition, an important point to clear, emotions are not moods, which are longer affective experiences have a clear trigger (can not be sure what caused the mood you're in) and tend to filter the view of the environment.

Now you know … additional benefit of meditation!
